The purpose of this blog is to share information about some of the most important leaders and visionaries to have graced the field of finance over the last half century or so. Future posts will focus on individuals that might be less known to the general public but who are well-respected in finance circles or have made important contributions to shaping the natural of today's financial landscape.


The discussion will begin with perhaps one of the most influential figures in the development of quantitative finance, Edward O. Thorp.

Edward O. Thorp: Counting Cards and Blackjack


In the 1950s, Ed Thorp was a young mathematician focused on probability theory, and he was studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. He accepted a professorship in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology upon graduation and began focusing his research on the probabilities involved in the game of Blackjack.
